Stop enabling apathy
What is unfolding in America is not merely an abstract or philosophical dilemma.
What is unfolding in America is not merely an abstract or philosophical dilemma. It has extremely serious and tangible implications for millions, if not billions, of people.
Authoritarians and tyrants do not relinquish power willingly, as history clearly illustrates time and time again. On the contrary, they will use brute force to reinforce and secure their power. This is currently happening in the USA and this is not hypothetical or debatable.
At this point in time the current response to these threats is woefully inadequate and insufficient. Anyone who claims otherwise is deluding themselves, as is plainly evidenced by reams of objective and verifiable facts. Critical guardrails and checks on power are being systematically dismantled on a daily basis, procedural norms have lost all meaning.
Americans, by and large, seem to be in a “deer in the headlights” state, a state of shock and disbelief. The belief in "American exceptionalism" seems to preclude them from being able to perceive that what is happening is actually happening, that it can’t be possible, that it can’t happen in America. That observation alone is extremely concerning, as it should be.
The parallels to the 1930’s are self evident. Millions of our ancestors courageously died fighting to save humanity from tyranny and fascism. Had they not done so our current reality would be radically different and dystopian.
Yet now the most powerful democracy, military and geopolitical force in history is transforming before our eyes into resembling what our grandparents fought against. The rate at which it is devolving is breathtaking.
It is elementary knowledge that you cannot capitulate to bullies or tyrants. Every child should have learned this lesson in grade school. Condoning or advocating disengagement, indifference or acquiescence is the antithesis of what actually needs to happen.
The problem we face is not with those who are concerned about these very real and existential threats. Rather, the challenge is with those who are in denial or apathetic about it, or even worse, those who advocate being disengaged, indifferent or complacent. Ignorance is not bliss, it will sleepwalk us to disaster.
I recently shared a video which described, in very clear and simple terms, why we should stop enabling people. Please stop enabling people who refuse to acknowledge the unprecedented perils, the darkness, that is staring us in the face.
No, not everyone needs to, or can, be an activist. However, apathy and willful ignorance about what is happening is dangerous and recklessly irresponsible. This is especially true for those who are in positions of influence or who have an audience. If they are not acknowledging what is actually happening they are doing humanity, future generations, and you, a profound disservice.
Apathy is why this is happening. If people don’t care about what is happening, if they don’t take a stand against tyranny, if they don’t care about our future, they literally don’t care about you, or your loved ones.
